New News!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fall 2025 brought a wave (pun intended!) of new grad students to the Sorte Lab! Rizelle Mazon (far left) continued in the lab, now as a 4+1 Masters student, and Chloe Goodsell (2nd from left) and Irissa Danke (3rd from left) joined the lab as Ph.D. students. In November, we travelled to San Diego for the WSN marine ecology conference, including undergrad researcher Kelsey Djan (2nd from right) and lab alum Kyle Suen (far right). It’s an exciting time in the lab with lots of new research underway, including measurements to detect any microplastics in local shellfish, behavioral studies, meta-analyses, and population demographic modeling.<\/p>\n

In June 2025, the Sorte Lab said goodbye to three amazing lab members! Dr. Ryan Beshai<\/a> (far right) completed his Ph.D. and started a postdoc at UC Santa Cruz working with the Raimondi-Carr Lab and National Parks Service. Kyle Suen (far left) completed his Master’s and started a position testing soils of fire-impacted areas of Southern California. Alexa Magee left for a study abroad program in Rome. We look forward to keeping in touch with them about their new adventures!<\/p>\n

In early June, the Sorte Lab (L-R: PI Sorte, Soffia Ramsey, Ryan Beshai, Kyle Suen & Edward Nguyen) made one last trip to the field for AY 2023-24 (here, at Heisler Park, Laguna Beach). PI Sorte filmed a news interview about our work on range shifts and the rest of the team worked with Kyle on field methods for his work on predation refuges. Since then, Soffia, Kyle, and Edward have graduated with their BS (congrats!!!) and Kyle has transitioned into UCI’s new 4+1 Master’s program. He and Ryan (who has one more year of his Ph.D. program) will be the two grad students next year, and Kelsey and Alexa (not pictured above) are working with them on their projects this summer.<\/p>\n

We anticipate adding 1-2 Ph.D. students and 1-2 new UCI undergraduates to the Lab over the next year. If you’re interested, please email Dr. Sorte (cjsorte at gmail.com) with a paragraph about your interests and experience, a resume\/CV, and an unofficial transcript.<\/p>\n

We’re now surveying during afternoon and evening low tides, so the head lamps are out! Here are undergraduate researchers Soffia Ramsey and Kyle Suen surveying at our Swami’s site on the south end of Encinitas, near San Diego.<\/p>\n

Fall 2023 field surveys are underway at 11 coastal sites in Southern California! This will complete our survey data set supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation<\/a> (2021-4) which includes surveys at 23 sites from Northern California south to Baja California, Mexico.
